Read Joshua Chapter 21

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Then the heads of the families of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of the tribes of the children of Israel.

They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The LORD commanded through Moses that we should be given cities to live in, with their pasture lands for our cattle."

So the children of Israel gave the Levites these cities and their pasture lands out of their own inheritance, as the LORD had commanded.

The lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. The children of Aaron the priest, who were Levites, received by lot thirteen cities from the tribe of Judah, from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin.

The rest of the children of Kohath received by lot ten cities from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half tribe of Manasseh.

The children of Gershon received by lot thirteen cities from the families of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

The children of Merari, family by family, received twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun.

So the children of Israel gave these cities with their pasture lands to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

From the tribe of the children of Judah and from the tribe of the children of Simeon they gave these cities, which are named here.

They went to the children of Aaron, who belonged to the families of the Kohathites, of the children of Levi, because the first lot was theirs.

They gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, that is, Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the pasture lands around it.

But the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.

So to the children of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its pasture lands, to be a city of refuge for anyone who killed a person, and Libnah with its pasture lands,

and Jattir with its pasture lands, and Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,

and Holon with its pasture lands, and Debir with its pasture lands,

and Ain with its pasture lands, and Juttah with its pasture lands, and Bethshemesh with its pasture lands: nine cities out of those two tribes.

From the tribe of Benjamin they gave Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,

Anathoth with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands: four cities.

All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

The families of the children of Kohath, the Levites who were left of the children of Kohath, received the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.

They gave them Shechem with its pasture lands in the hill country of Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for anyone who killed a person, and Gezer with its pasture lands,

and Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Bethhoron with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the tribe of Dan they gave Eltekeh with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,

Aijalon with its pasture lands, Gathrimmon with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the half tribe of Manasseh they gave Tanach with its pasture lands, and Gathrimmon with its pasture lands: two cities.

In all there were ten cities with their pasture lands for the families of the rest of the children of Kohath.

To the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, they gave from the other half tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with its pasture lands, to be a city of refuge for anyone who killed a person, and Beeshterah with its pasture lands: two cities.

From the tribe of Issachar they gave Kishon with its pasture lands, Dabareh with its pasture lands,

Jarmuth with its pasture lands, Engannim with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the tribe of Asher they gave Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,

Helkath with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the tribe of Naphtali they gave Kedesh in Galilee with its pasture lands, to be a city of refuge for anyone who killed a person, and Hammothdor with its pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands: three cities.

All the cities of the Gershonites, family by family, were thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

To the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, they gave from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam with its pasture lands, and Kartah with its pasture lands,

Dimnah with its pasture lands, Nahalal with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the tribe of Reuben they gave Bezer with its pasture lands, and Jahazah with its pasture lands,

Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands: four cities.

From the tribe of Gad they gave Ramoth in Gilead with its pasture lands, to be a city of refuge for anyone who killed a person, and Mahanaim with its pasture lands,

Heshbon with its pasture lands, Jazer with its pasture lands: four cities in all.

So all the cities for the children of Merari, family by family, who were left of the families of the Levites, were twelve cities by their lot.

All the cities of the Levites inside the land held by the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their pasture lands.

Each one of these cities had its pasture lands around it. So it was with all these cities.

The LORD gave Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers. They took it and lived in it.

The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies could stand before them. The LORD handed all their enemies over to them.

Not one word failed of all the good things which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. Everything came true.
