Book of Genesis

Jewish and Christian tradition attributes Genesis to Moses, who lived around 1500-1400 BC. Jesus and New Testament writers refer to the Pentateuch as the writings of Moses. Moses likely compiled earlier written records and oral traditions passed down from the patriarchs, shaping them under divine inspiration into the book we have. Some scholars propose later editors made minor additions, such as place name updates, but the Mosaic authorship of the core material remains the traditional position.

Christians hold several views on the creation days. Young-earth creationists interpret them as literal 24-hour periods about 6,000-10,000 years ago. Day-age proponents see each day as representing a long age. Framework advocates view the days as a literary structure organizing creation thematically rather than chronologically. All evangelical positions affirm that God is the Creator, that he made everything with purpose, that humans are uniquely created in his image, and that Genesis teaches historical truth about origins. The days' precise nature is a secondary matter on which faithful Christians disagree.

The Genesis account uses universal language: all flesh, every living thing, all the high hills under the whole heaven. Traditional interpretation understands a global flood that destroyed all human and animal life outside the ark. Some propose a regional flood covering the populated world of that time. Arguments for a global flood include the universal language, the need for an ark rather than migration, the duration, and Peter's comparison to final judgment. The geological and scientific questions remain debated, but the theological point is clear: God judged human wickedness comprehensively while preserving a remnant through grace.

God tested Abraham's faith to prove its genuineness and strengthen it. Abraham had to choose between his beloved son and obedience to God. The test revealed whether Abraham trusted God's promise that through Isaac his descendants would come, even if it meant believing God could raise Isaac from the dead. God never intended Isaac to die; he provided a ram as substitute. This event demonstrates the principle of substitutionary sacrifice central to biblical redemption, foreshadowing God himself providing his Son as the sacrifice for sin. Abraham's faith passed the ultimate test, becoming the pattern for all who believe.

In the ancient world, a father's blessing carried weight as a prophetic declaration shaping the future. The patriarchal blessings in Genesis are not merely wishes but pronouncements with divine backing. Isaac's blessing of Jacob, though obtained through deception, could not be revoked because God had already chosen Jacob. Jacob's blessings on his twelve sons outlined the future of each tribe. The blessing of Judah proved particularly significant, prophesying that the scepter would not depart from Judah, pointing to David's dynasty and ultimately to Christ. These blessings show God working through human customs to reveal his sovereign plan.
