After Abimelech, Tola of Issachar judges Israel twenty-three years from Shamir in Ephraim's hill country, followed by Jair the Gileadite for twenty-two years, whose thirty sons ride thirty donkeys and control thirty cities. Israel again does evil, serving the Baals, Ashtaroth, and gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and the Philistines; the LORD's anger delivers them to the Philistines and Ammonites who oppress them eighteen years. When Israel cries out confessing sin, the LORD initially refuses deliverance, telling them to cry to the gods they have chosen; but when they put away foreign gods and He sees their misery, He relents, and Gilead's leaders seek someone to fight Ammon.

Gilead
