Ezra 8 - Summary

The chapter lists the family heads who returned to Jerusalem with Ezra during Artaxerxes' reign, including descendants of Phinehas, Ithamar, David, and various prominent families, totaling approximately 1,500 men besides women and children. Ezra assembled them at the river Ahava for three days, and finding no Levites among them, sent leaders to Iddo at Casiphia who sent them 38 Levites and 220 temple servants. Ezra proclaimed a fast to humble themselves before God and seek safe passage rather than requesting a military escort, since he had told the king that God's hand favors those who seek Him; after entrusting the silver, gold, and vessels to twelve leading priests, they departed and arrived safely in Jerusalem after the Lord delivered them from enemies and ambush, then offered burnt offerings, delivered the royal commissions to the satraps and governors who supported the people and the temple.
