Read John Chapter 19

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped.

2The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They also put a purple robe on him,

3and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they hit him with their hands.

4Pilate went outside again and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no fault in him."

5Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Look at the man."

6When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no fault in him."

7The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."

8When Pilate heard that, he was even more afraid.

9He went back into the judgment hall and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

10So Pilate said to him, "Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to crucify you, and power to set you free?"

11Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against me, unless it had been given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."

12From then on Pilate tried to set him free. But the Jews shouted, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Anyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."

13When Pilate heard that, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in a place called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14It was the preparation day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Look at your King."

15But they shouted, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."

16Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

17Carrying his cross, he went out to a place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.

18There they crucified him, and two others with him, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle.

19Pilate wrote a notice and put it on the cross. The writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am King of the Jews.'"

22Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and made four parts, one part for each soldier. They took his tunic too. Now the tunic had no seam; it was woven in one piece from the top.

24So they said to each other, "Let us not tear it. Let us throw dice for it, to see whose it will be." This happened so that the scripture would come true which says, "They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they threw dice." So this is what the soldiers did.

25Now standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, look, your son."

27Then he said to the disciple, "Look, your mother." And from that hour that disciple took her into his own home.

28After this, Jesus knew that everything was now finished. So that the scripture would come true, he said, "I am thirsty."

29A jar full of vinegar was standing there. So they filled a sponge with the vinegar, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and held it up to his mouth.

30When Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31It was the preparation day, and the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses on the sabbath day, for that sabbath was a great day. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodies taken away.

32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who was crucified with him.

33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.

35The man who saw it has given his witness, and his witness is true. He knows that what he says is true, so that you may believe.

36These things happened so that the scripture would come true: "Not one of his bones shall be broken."

37And another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they pierced."

38After this, Joseph of Arimathaea asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. He was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, because he was afraid of the Jews. Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus away.

39Nicodemus came too, the man who had first come to Jesus by night. He brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.

40Then they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews when they bury someone.

41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.

42So they laid Jesus there, because it was the Jews' preparation day, and the tomb was near.

Explanation

John 19

In short

This chapter describes Jesus' trial before Pilate, his crucifixion, and his burial. Though Pilate finds Jesus innocent, pressure from the Jewish leaders and fear of losing Caesar's favor drive him to hand Jesus over to be executed. The chapter records Jesus' final words, the fulfillment of Scripture, and his placement in a new tomb.

Context

Jesus has been arrested and brought to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate holds the power to execute or release him. The Jewish leaders want Jesus dead and press their case to Pilate. This chapter covers the final hours of Jesus' life, from his appearance before Pilate through his death and burial.

What the text says

Pilate orders Jesus scourged and the soldiers mock him with a crown of thorns and purple robe (verses 1-3). Pilate brings Jesus before the crowd, saying he finds "no fault in him" (verses 4-6). The chief priests answer that by their law Jesus deserves death because "he made himself the Son of God" (verse 7). This claim frightens Pilate. When Jesus remains silent in the judgment hall, Pilate reminds him of his power, but Jesus replies his power comes from above, and "he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin" (verses 9-11). The crowd threatens that if Pilate releases Jesus, he is "not Caesar's friend" (verse 12). This threat decides Pilate: he delivers Jesus to be crucified (verse 16). At Golgotha, soldiers crucify Jesus between two criminals (verses 17-18). Pilate's inscription reads "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews" in three languages (verses 19-20). The soldiers divide Jesus' garments by casting lots (verses 23-24). Jesus commits his mother to the beloved disciple's care (verses 26-27). Jesus says "I thirst," receives vinegar, then declares "It is finished" and dies (verses 28-30). A soldier pierces his side, producing "blood and water" (verse 34). Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus wrap the body in linen with spices and place it in a new, unused tomb (verses 38-42).

Takeaways

  • Pilate knows Jesus is innocent but gives in to political pressure rather than stand against it.
  • Jesus speaks only when asked directly and accepts his death as fulfilling Scripture.
  • Those who believe are to see Jesus as one they "pierced" and recognize what happened to him.
