Nazareth

Nazareth was a small, insignificant village not mentioned in the Old Testament, the Talmud, or by the historian Josephus. It had no distinguished history, no famous scholars, and was located in Galilee, a region looked down upon by Judeans. Its population was perhaps only a few hundred people. The contempt in Nathanael's question reflected the common view that nothing important could originate from such an obscure place.

When Jesus taught in the Nazareth synagogue, the people were initially impressed. But when he implied that God's grace would extend to Gentiles as it had through Elijah and Elisha, they became furious. They also struggled to accept that someone they had watched grow up, the carpenter's son, could be the Messiah. Their familiarity bred contempt, leading Jesus to observe that a prophet has no honor in his hometown.

Nazarene simply means someone from Nazareth. Matthew saw prophetic significance in Jesus being called a Nazarene, possibly connecting it to the Hebrew word 'netzer' meaning 'branch,' a messianic title in Isaiah 11:1. The early church was called 'the sect of the Nazarenes' by opponents. The term appears on the inscription above Jesus' cross: 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.'
