Read John Chapter 20

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

On the first day of the week, early, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. She said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him."

So Peter and that other disciple set out and went to the tomb.

The two of them ran together. The other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first.

He bent down and looked in. He saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter came, following him, and he went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there.

He also saw the cloth that had been around Jesus' head. It was not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in as well. He saw, and he believed.

For until then they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

Then the disciples went back to their own homes.

But Mary stood outside the tomb, crying. As she cried, she bent down and looked into the tomb.

She saw two angels in white sitting there. One was at the head and the other at the feet of the place where the body of Jesus had lain.

They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him."

When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not know that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" She thought he was the gardener, so she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."

Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him, "Rabboni," which means Master.

Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet gone up to my Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am going up to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.'"

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her.

That same day, in the evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were together. The doors were shut, because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

Then Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As my Father has sent me, so I send you."

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit."

"If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you keep anyone's sins, they are kept."

But Thomas, one of the twelve, who was called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

Eight days later his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Do not be without faith, but believe."

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God."

Jesus said to him, "Thomas, you have believed because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Jesus did many other signs in front of his disciples, which are not written in this book.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life through his name.
