When Jesus had said these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Cedron. There was a garden there, and he and his disciples went into it.
Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
So Judas took a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"
They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." And Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
So as soon as he said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go their way."
This happened so that the words he had said would come true: "Of those you gave me, I have lost none."
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. The cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?"
Then the band of soldiers and the captain and the officers of the Jews took Jesus and tied him up.
They led him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.
Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die for the people.
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you not also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."
The servants and officers were standing there. They had made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Then the high priest asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret."
"Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. Look, they know what I said."
When he had said this, one of the officers standing there struck Jesus with the palm of his hand and said, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, show what was wrong. But if I spoke well, why do you hit me?"
Now Annas had sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "Are you not also one of his disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not."
One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
Peter denied it again, and at once the cock crowed.
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the judgment hall. It was early. They themselves did not go into the judgment hall, so that they would not be made unclean, but could eat the passover.
So Pilate went out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?"
They answered him, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."
Then Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him by your own law." So the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death."
This happened so that the words of Jesus would come true, which showed what kind of death he was going to die.
Then Pilate went into the judgment hall again. He called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
Jesus answered him, "Do you say this on your own, or did others tell you about me?"
Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?"
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here."
So Pilate said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: to tell the truth about the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice."
Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no fault in him at all."
"But you have a custom that I should set one prisoner free for you at the passover. So do you want me to set free for you the King of the Jews?"
Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.
