Mary of Bethany Sister of Martha and Lazarus

While some traditions have conflated these women, most biblical scholars distinguish Mary of Bethany as a separate person. She is consistently portrayed as part of a respectable family in Bethany, sister to Martha and Lazarus, and her anointing occurs at a different time and place than the sinful woman's anointing in Luke 7. The Gospels present her as a devoted disciple, not someone with a sinful past who needed forgiveness.

Jesus defended Mary because she had chosen spiritual priorities over earthly ones. While serving others is important, Jesus taught that hearing and receiving God's word is even more crucial. Martha was 'worried and troubled about many things,' but Mary chose 'the good portion' that would not be taken from her. Jesus wasn't criticizing service but emphasizing that spiritual nourishment must come first.

The pure nard Mary used was worth about a year's wages, making her sacrifice extraordinarily generous. Anointing feet was an act of humble service, as feet were considered the lowliest part of the body. Her wiping Jesus' feet with her hair showed complete abandonment of social conventions in her devotion. Jesus interpreted this as preparation for His burial, suggesting Mary understood His approaching death better than the disciples who still expected an earthly kingdom.
