Read Deuteronomy Chapter 34

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead, as far as Dan,

2and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, as far as the sea in the west,

3and the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

4And the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised with an oath to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, when I said, 'I will give it to your children.' I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you shall not cross over into it."

5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said.

6And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, facing Bethpeor. But no one knows where his grave is, to this day.

7Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not weak, and his strength had not failed.

8The children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. And the children of Israel listened to him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

10Since then no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

11in all the signs and the wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,

12and in all that mighty hand, and in all the great and fearful deeds which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Explanation

Deuteronomy 34

In short

This chapter tells the story of Moses' death at the end of his life and leadership. God shows him the promised land from a mountaintop, Moses dies at 120 years old in good health, and Joshua takes his place as leader of Israel.

Context

This is the final chapter of Deuteronomy, the last of the five books of Moses. The Israelites have wandered in the wilderness for forty years and are now camped in the plains of Moab, ready to cross the Jordan River into the land God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses will not enter that land, but God grants him a view of it before his death.

What the text says

Moses climbs Mount Nebo to its peak, Pisgah (verse 1), and from there the Lord shows him the entire promised land spread out below him, from Gilead in the north through the territories of Naphtali, Ephraim, Manasseh, and Judah, to the southern desert and the valley of Jericho (verses 1-3). The Lord reminds Moses that this is the land sworn to the three patriarchs and tells him he may see it but will not enter it (verse 4). Moses dies in Moab (verse 5), and God himself buries him in a hidden valley; no one has ever found his grave (verse 6). He dies at 120 years old with his eyesight and strength still intact (verse 7). Israel mourns him for thirty days (verse 8). Joshua, filled with wisdom because Moses had laid hands on him, becomes the new leader, and Israel obeys him as they had obeyed Moses (verse 9). The passage concludes by saying no prophet like Moses has ever arisen in Israel, for God knew him face to face and worked through him mighty deeds and terrors in Egypt and before all Israel (verses 10-12).

Takeaways

  • Moses sees the promised land but does not enter it, fulfilling what God had said earlier.
  • His death is presented as peaceful and dignified, with no loss of vigor despite his advanced age.
  • Joshua's authority comes from Moses' laying on of hands and from the spirit of wisdom God gives him.
