Original Summary

Read 2 Samuel Chapter 2 Summary

David inquires of the LORD and is directed to Hebron, where Judah anoints him king; he blesses the men of Jabesh-gilead for burying Saul. Abner, Saul's commander, makes Saul's son Ish-bosheth king over Israel at Mahanaim, ruling two years while David rules Judah at Hebron seven years. At the pool of Gibeon, Abner's forces meet David's under Joab; a contest of champions ends in mutual slaughter. In the battle that follows, Joab's swift brother Asahel pursues Abner who reluctantly kills him with a backward spear thrust; Joab and Abishai pursue Abner until nightfall when both sides withdraw.
