Israel goes to battle against the Philistines at Aphek and is defeated with four thousand slain; the elders decide to bring the ark of the covenant from Shiloh, causing great shouts that frighten the Philistines who resolve to fight more fiercely. Israel suffers catastrophic defeat: thirty thousand foot soldiers fall, including Hophni and Phinehas; the ark is captured. When the news reaches Eli sitting by the gate, he falls backward, breaks his neck, and dies. Phinehas's wife, giving birth as she dies, names the child Ichabod—'the glory has departed from Israel'—because the ark is taken.
