The descendants of Aaron were divided into twenty-four courses for priestly service, established by lot in the presence of David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the priestly and Levitical families. The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, with subsequent courses including Jedaiah, Harim, Seorim, and continuing through the twenty-fourth course of Maaziah, establishing a rotating system of temple service. The remainder of the Levites from the families of Kohath and Merari were likewise organized by lot for their supporting duties, ensuring fair and divinely sanctioned distribution of responsibilities among all the consecrated families.
