Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem during Jehoiakim's reign and carries off temple vessels along with selected noble youths for Babylonian education, including Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, renamed Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Daniel resolves not to defile himself with royal food, and after a ten-day trial on vegetables, the four prove healthier and ten times wiser than all Babylon's magicians.
