A lament over Lebanon's cedars and Bashan's oaks precedes the prophet's enactment of shepherding the flock doomed for slaughter with two staffs, Favor and Union. Cutting off three shepherds in one month and becoming impatient with the flock, he breaks the staffs—annulling God's covenant with the peoples and the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. He is paid thirty pieces of silver, cast to the potter in the LORD's house.
