"Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, 'When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,"
then you must drive out all the people who live in the land ahead of you. Destroy all their carved figures, and destroy all their metal images, and pull down all their high places.
You shall take the land from those who live there and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess it.
You shall divide the land by lot as an inheritance among your families. To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group give a smaller inheritance. Each man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falls. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.
But if you will not drive out the people of the land ahead of you, then those you let stay will become sharp points in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will trouble you in the land where you live.
"And what is more, I will do to you what I planned to do to them.'"
