Nehemiah 10 - Summary

This chapter records those who sealed the covenant: Nehemiah the governor, Zedekiah, and eighty-three priests including Seraiah, Azariah, and Jeremiah; seventeen Levites including Jeshua, Binnui, and Kadmiel; and forty-four leaders of the people including Parosh, Pahath-moab, and Elam. The rest of the people—priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all who had separated from the peoples of the lands to the law of God, along with their wives, sons, and daughters who had understanding—joined in the oath with a curse to walk in God's law given through Moses. They specifically committed not to intermarry with the peoples of the land, not to buy from them on the sabbath or holy days, to observe the sabbatical year and cancel debts, to give a third of a shekel annually for temple service, to provide wood for the altar by lot, to bring firstfruits and firstborn to the temple, and to pay the tithes to the Levites who would in turn bring a tithe of the tithes to the temple storerooms, promising not to neglect the house of their God.
