The famous Bethlehem prophecy declares that from this small clan shall come forth for the LORD one who will be ruler in Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient days—a messianic oracle later cited at Jesus' birth. After labor's travail, the ruler will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, bringing peace even against Assyrian invasion through seven shepherds and eight princes. The remnant of Jacob among the nations shall be like dew from the LORD and like a lion among flocks of sheep; the LORD will cut off horses, chariots, cities, fortresses, sorceries, idols, and sacred groves, purging Israel of all false trust.
