God commands Jeremiah to buy a potter's earthen flask and take elders to the Valley of Ben-hinnom, where children were sacrificed to Baal. He prophesies such slaughter that the valley will be called Slaughter. Jeremiah breaks the flask, declaring that God will similarly break this people and city beyond repair. He repeats the prophecy in the temple court.
