Hosea 4 - Simple English

OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read Hosea Chapter 4

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel. The LORD has a case against the people who live in the land, because there is no truth, no mercy, and no knowledge of God in the land.

2There is swearing and lying and killing and stealing and adultery. They break out, and one act of bloodshed follows another.

3So the land will mourn, and everyone who lives in it will waste away, together with the wild animals and the birds of the sky. Even the fish of the sea will be taken away.

4Yet let no one argue, and let no one accuse another. For your people are like those who quarrel with the priest.

5So you will fall in the daytime, and the prophet will fall with you in the night, and I will destroy your mother.

6My people are destroyed because they have no knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, so that you will not be a priest to me. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

7The more they increased, the more they sinned against me. So I will change their glory into shame.

8They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their wrongdoing.

9And it will be: like people, like priest. I will punish them for their ways, and pay them back for what they do.

10They will eat, and not have enough. They will act like prostitutes, and will not increase, because they have stopped paying attention to the LORD.

11Prostitution and wine and new wine take away the heart.

12My people ask advice from a piece of wood, and their stick tells them what to do. For a spirit of prostitution has led them astray, and they have left their God to act like prostitutes.

13They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains and burn incense on the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shade there is good. So your daughters will act like prostitutes, and your wives will commit adultery.

14I will not punish your daughters when they act like prostitutes, nor your wives when they commit adultery. For the men themselves go apart with prostitutes, and they sacrifice with temple prostitutes. So the people who do not understand will fall.

15Though you, Israel, act like a prostitute, do not let Judah become guilty. Do not come to Gilgal, and do not go up to Bethaven, and do not swear, "As the LORD lives."

16For Israel has turned back, like a heifer that will not be led. Now the LORD will feed them like a lamb in a wide field.

17Ephraim is joined to idols. Leave him alone.

18Their drink has turned sour. They have acted like prostitutes again and again. Her rulers dearly love shame, saying, "Give."

19The wind has wrapped her up in its wings, and they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Explanation

Hosea 4

In short

God brings a formal complaint against Israel because the land is filled with lying, murder, theft, and adultery, and the people have abandoned knowledge of God. The priests profit from sin rather than guiding people back to God, and God announces that both priests and people will face punishment for their unfaithfulness.

Context

This is the opening of Hosea's message to Israel (the northern kingdom). Hosea was a prophet sent to warn Israel of God's judgment, and this chapter sets out the core charges against the nation. God speaks through the prophet to the inhabitants of the land, addressing both ordinary people and the religious leadership.

What the text says

Verses 1-2 announce God's lawsuit: there is no truth, mercy, or knowledge of God in the land, and people are openly committing swearing, lying, killing, stealing, and adultery. Verse 3 states that because of this, the land itself will mourn and wither, and even animals and sea creatures will suffer loss.

Verses 4-6 shift focus to religious leadership. The text says "thy people are as they that strive with the priest," and both prophet and priest will fall. Verse 6 gives the reason: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me." God will forget their children because they have forgotten his law.

Verses 7-9 describe how the priests contribute to the problem. They "eat up the sin of my people" (that is, they benefit from sin offerings) and set their heart on iniquity. As the people increase in number, they increase in sin, and God will punish priests and people alike.

Verses 10-14 detail the specific unfaithfulness: whoredom (spiritual infidelity expressed through sexual imagery), wine, and consulting wooden idols instead of God. Verse 12 states the "spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God." They sacrifice on high places under trees, and this leads their daughters and wives into sexual sin. Verse 14 says God will not punish the women, since the men themselves are separated with prostitutes and sacrifice with harlots.

Verses 15-19 conclude with a warning to Judah (the southern kingdom) not to follow Israel's example. Israel is like "a backsliding heifer." Verse 17 states plainly: "Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone," suggesting Israel is beyond recovery. The final verses describe Israel's shame and the wind binding them up in judgment.

Takeaways

  • The passage presents knowledge of God and faithfulness to his law as what holds a society together; without them, everything breaks down.
  • Religious leaders who profit from people's sin become part of the problem rather than its cure.
  • The text uses the language of broken relationship and infidelity to describe Israel's turn away from God.
