Fearing their potential as a fifth column, Pharaoh oppresses the Israelites with harsh labor, building store cities Pithom and Raamses. When oppression fails to curtail population growth, Pharaoh commands the Hebrew midwives to kill male infants, but they disobey out of fear of God.
