The LORD sends Nathan the prophet with a parable: a rich man with many flocks takes a poor man's only beloved lamb to feed a traveler. David's anger burns: the man deserves death and shall restore fourfold. Nathan declares, 'You are the man!' and pronounces judgment: the sword will never depart from David's house, evil will arise from within his household, and his wives will be given to another publicly. David confesses, 'I have sinned against the LORD'; Nathan says the LORD has put away his sin and he will not die, but the child will die. Despite David's fasting and pleading, the child dies on the seventh day; David rises, worships, and eats. He comforts Bathsheba and she bears Solomon, whom the LORD loves. Joab captures Rabbah's water supply and summons David to finish the conquest and take the credit.
