1 Samuel 17 - Summary

Original Summary

Read 1 Samuel Chapter 17 Summary

The Philistines gather at Socoh, with their champion Goliath of Gath—over nine feet tall with bronze armor, shield, and spear like a weaver's beam—defying Israel's ranks forty days, demanding single combat. David, sent by Jesse to bring provisions to his brothers, hears the giant's challenge and is indignant that this uncircumcised Philistine should defy the armies of the living God. Despite Saul's doubts and Eliab's scorn, David refuses Saul's armor, takes five smooth stones and his sling, and approaches Goliath declaring he comes in the name of the LORD of hosts. David slings a stone into Goliath's forehead; the giant falls facedown, and David cuts off his head with the Philistine's own sword, routing the enemy.
