Aaron and the priests bear responsibility for sanctuary offenses while the Levites assist them but must not approach the holy vessels or altar on penalty of death. Priestly income includes portions from offerings, firstfruits, devoted things, and the redemption price of firstborn; they receive no land inheritance because the Lord is their portion. Levites receive all Israel's tithes as inheritance for their service, then tithe that tithe to the priests as their contribution to the Lord.
