Jesus delivers a scathing denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees, warning the crowds and disciples to observe their teaching but not their hypocritical practice of binding heavy burdens on others while seeking honorific titles and chief seats. Seven woes condemn their blocking of the kingdom, devouring widows' houses, making converts twice the children of hell, blind guidance in oath casuistry, tithing herbs while neglecting justice and mercy, outward cleansing while inwardly full of extortion, and appearing righteous while being sons of those who murdered the prophets. The lament over Jerusalem expresses Jesus' longing to gather her children as a hen gathers chicks, but their refusal ensures their house is left desolate until they bless Him who comes in the Lord's name.
The Temple in Jerusalem was the permanent house of worship built by Solomon on Mount Moriah. Destroyed by Babylon, it was rebuilt by Zerubbabel and later greatly expanded by Herod. Jesus taught in the Temple courts, cleared it of merchants, and predicted its destruction, which occurred in 70 AD.
