Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

2There he was changed in front of them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

3Then Moses and Elias appeared to them, talking with him.

4Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, let me put up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elias."

5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. And a voice came out of the cloud, which said, "This is my beloved Son, and I am well pleased with him. Listen to him."

6When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

7Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Get up. Do not be afraid."

8When they looked up, they saw no one but Jesus only.

9As they came down from the mountain, Jesus gave them an order: "Tell no one about the vision until the Son of man has been raised from the dead."

10His disciples asked him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elias must come first?"

11Jesus answered, "Elias will indeed come first, and he will put all things right again."

12"But I tell you that Elias has already come, and they did not know him. They did to him whatever they wanted. In the same way the Son of man is going to suffer at their hands."

13Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

14When they came back to the crowd, a man came to Jesus. He knelt down before him and said,

15"Lord, have mercy on my son. He is a lunatic, and he suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire, and often into the water."

16"I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him."

17Then Jesus answered, "You faithless and crooked people, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me."

18Jesus spoke sharply to the demon, and it came out of him. The boy was healed from that very hour.

19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and said, "Why could we not drive it out?"

20Jesus said to them, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

21"But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

22While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is going to be handed over into the hands of men."

23"They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised again." And they were deeply grieved.

24When they came to Capernaum, the men who collected the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Does your master not pay the tax?"

25He said, "Yes." When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke first and said, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take duties or taxes? From their own children, or from other people?"

26Peter said to him, "From other people." Jesus said to him, "Then the children are free."

27"But so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up. When you open its mouth, you will find a piece of money. Take that and give it to them for me and for you."

Explanation

Matthew 17

In short

Matthew 17 shows Jesus revealing his divine nature to three disciples through a miraculous vision, then demonstrates his power by healing a troubled boy and teaching about faith. The chapter ends with Jesus predicting his death and performing a miracle to pay the temple tax.

Context

This chapter comes after Jesus has asked his disciples who they believe he is. Three of them, Peter, James, and John, now see evidence of Jesus' true identity. After the transfiguration vision on the mountain, Jesus comes back down to crowds of people who are still skeptical of him. He then predicts what will happen to him in Jerusalem.

What the text says

Jesus takes three disciples up a mountain, where he is "transfigured" before them, his "face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light" (verses 1-2). Moses and Elijah appear speaking with him (verse 3). Peter wants to build three shelters, but a bright cloud covers them and a voice from it says, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him" (verses 4-5). The disciples are terrified; Jesus tells them not to fear and charges them to tell no one about the vision until he rises from the dead (verses 6-9).

Descending the mountain, the disciples ask why the scribes say Elijah must come first. Jesus says Elijah has already come in John the Baptist, and like Elijah, Jesus himself will suffer from those who reject him (verses 10-13). A man brings his sick son, asking for healing. The disciples could not cure him, but Jesus rebukes the demon and the boy is healed (verses 14-18). When the disciples ask why they failed, Jesus says it was due to their "unbelief" and that faith, even small as a mustard seed, can accomplish great things (verses 19-21). Jesus predicts he will be betrayed and killed and rise on the third day (verses 22-23). Finally, when questioned about the temple tax, Jesus has Peter catch a fish that carries a coin to pay for both of them (verses 24-27).

Takeaways

  • Jesus' divinity is revealed not just through words but through visible transformation and the Father's voice.
  • The disciples' ability to serve others depends on their faith in Jesus.
  • Jesus accepts payment of taxes even while hinting that those close to him are spiritually free.
