The Pharisees came with the Sadducees to test Jesus. They asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
He answered them, "In the evening you say, 'The weather will be fine, for the sky is red.'"
And in the morning you say, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and dark.' You hypocrites. You know how to read the face of the sky, but you cannot read the signs of the times.
"A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign. No sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonas." Then he left them and went away.
When his disciples came to the other side of the lake, they had forgotten to bring bread.
Then Jesus said to them, "Take care. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."
They talked about this among themselves and said, "He says this because we have brought no bread."
Jesus knew what they were saying. He said to them, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?"
"Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?"
"Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?"
"How is it that you do not understand? I was not speaking to you about bread. I said, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."
Then they understood. He was not telling them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I, the Son of man, am?"
They said, "Some say you are John the Baptist. Some say Elias. Others say Jeremias, or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus answered him, "You are blessed, Simon Barjona. Flesh and blood did not show this to you, but my Father who is in heaven."
"And I say to you also, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church. The gates of hell shall not overcome it."
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Then he ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem. There he must suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again on the third day.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. He said, "Far be it from you, Lord. This shall not happen to you."
But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me. You are not thinking the things of God, but the things of men."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
"For whoever will save his life shall lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it."
"What good is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels. Then he shall reward every man according to his works."
"I tell you the truth, there are some standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom."
