Elijah

Elijah

Prophet of Fire

Old Testament

Elijah was one of the most powerful prophets in the Old Testament, known for his dramatic confrontations with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. During a time when Israel had turned to worship false gods under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, Elijah called the nation back to the true God. He performed miracles, including raising a widow's son from the dead and calling fire from heaven. He was taken to heaven in a whirlwind with a chariot of fire, and is expected to return before the Messiah.

Spiritual Lessons

God Provides in Unexpected Ways

Ravens (unclean birds) fed Elijah; a Gentile widow sustained him in enemy territory. Don't limit how God might provide for you.

Stand Alone if Necessary

Elijah faced 450 prophets of Baal alone on Carmel. One person with God is a majority. Be willing to stand against the crowd for truth.

Even Prophets Get Discouraged

After his greatest victory, Elijah fled and wanted to die. God didn't rebuke him but sent rest and food. Take care of physical needs in spiritual crisis.

God Speaks in Stillness

At Horeb, God wasn't in the wind, earthquake, or fire—but in a still small voice. Cultivate silence to hear God's voice.
