John 8 - Summary

Original Summary

Read John Chapter 8 Summary

Jesus' encounter with the woman caught in adultery culminates in His challenge that the sinless one cast the first stone, followed by His assurance to the woman that He does not condemn her and His command that she sin no more. The 'I am the light of the world' discourse develops into a heated controversy with the Jews about testimony, judgment, freedom, Abraham's true children, and the devil as father of lies. Jesus' climactic declaration 'Before Abraham was, I am' provokes attempted stoning from which He escapes, having claimed the divine name and preexistence that His opponents consider blasphemy.
