Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
Early in the morning he came again into the temple. All the people came to him. He sat down and taught them.
The scribes and Pharisees brought him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in the middle of them all.
They said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act."
"Now Moses in the law commanded us that such women should be stoned. But what do you say?"
They said this to test him, so that they would have something to accuse him of. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger, as though he did not hear them.
They kept on asking him. So he stood up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
And again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
Those who heard it were convicted by their own conscience. They went out one by one, beginning with the oldest, down to the last. Jesus was left alone, with the woman standing there in the middle.
Jesus stood up and saw no one but the woman. He said to her, "Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?"
She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."
Then Jesus spoke to them again. He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
So the Pharisees said to him, "You are giving witness about yourself. Your witness is not true."
Jesus answered them, "Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true. For I know where I came from and where I am going. But you cannot tell where I come from and where I am going."
"You judge by human standards. I judge no one."
"And yet if I do judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone. I am with the Father who sent me."
"It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true."
"I am one who gives witness about myself, and the Father who sent me gives witness about me."
Then they said to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You do not know me or my Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also."
Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. And no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you cannot come."
So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?"
He said to them, "You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world."
"That is why I said to you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."
Then they said to him, "Who are you?" And Jesus said to them, "The same as I have told you from the beginning."
"I have many things to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true, and I speak to the world the things I have heard from him."
They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father.
Then Jesus said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own. I speak these things just as my Father has taught me."
"And he who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do the things that please him."
As he spoke these words, many believed in him.
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you continue in my word, then you are truly my disciples."
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and we have never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, 'You will be made free'?"
Jesus answered them, "I tell you the truth, everyone who commits sin is the servant of sin."
"And the servant does not stay in the house for ever, but the Son stays for ever."
"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."
"I know that you are Abraham's descendants. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no place in you."
"I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have seen with your father."
They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham."
"But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this."
"You do the deeds of your father." Then they said to him, "We were not born of sexual sin. We have one Father, even God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me. For I came from God, and I am here. I did not come on my own; he sent me."
"Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot hear my word."
"You belong to your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and did not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from what is his own, for he is a liar and the father of lies."
"And because I tell you the truth, you do not believe me."
"Which of you can prove me guilty of sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?"
"Whoever is of God hears God's words. You do not hear them, because you are not of God."
Then the Jews answered him, "Are we not right to say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon. I honour my Father, and you dishonour me."
"And I do not seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the judge."
"I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and so are the prophets. Yet you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'"
"Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who do you make yourself out to be?"
Jesus answered, "If I honour myself, my honour means nothing. It is my Father who honours me, the one you say is your God."
"Yet you have not known him, but I know him. If I said I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I know him, and I keep his word."
"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad."
Then the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
