Mount SinaiMount Sinai, also called Mount Horeb, is where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and established the covenant with Israel. The mountain was covered with fire, smoke, and thunder when God descended upon it. Moses spent 40 days on the mountain receiving the Law. Centuries later, the prophet Elijah fled to this same mountain and encountered God in a still, small voice.

The city has twelve gates named for the twelve tribes of Israel and twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles. Its streets are gold, its gates are pearls, and there is no need for sun or moon because the glory of God illuminates it. There is no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
