Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve apostles who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. He identified Jesus to the arresting authorities with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane. Overcome by remorse, he returned the money and hanged himself. His name has become synonymous with betrayal.
