Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came home safely to his house in Jerusalem.
Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him. He said to king Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the ungodly, and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, anger has come upon you from the LORD."
"Even so, there are good things found in you. You have taken the groves out of the land, and you have set your heart to seek God."
So Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem. He went out again among the people, from Beersheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back to the LORD God of their fathers.
He appointed judges in the land, in all the walled cities of Judah, city by city.
He said to the judges, "Be careful what you do. You do not judge for man, but for the LORD, who is with you when you give judgment."
"So now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful, and do this. For there is no wrong with the LORD our God. He does not favour one person over another, and he does not take gifts."
In Jerusalem also Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief men of the families of Israel, to give the judgment of the LORD and to settle disputes. And they returned to Jerusalem.
He gave them this command: "You shall do this in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a whole heart."
"Whatever case comes to you from your brothers who live in their cities, whether about bloodshed, or about law and commandment, statutes and judgments, you shall warn them not to sin against the LORD. If you do not, anger will come upon you and upon your brothers. Do this, and you will not sin."
