Read 1 Kings Chapter 14

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick.

Jeroboam said to his wife, "Get up, please, and dress yourself so that no one will know you are the wife of Jeroboam. Then go to Shiloh. Look, Ahijah the prophet is there. He is the one who told me that I would be king over this people."

"Take with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the child."

Jeroboam's wife did so. She got up and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were fixed because he was old.

The LORD said to Ahijah, "Look, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is sick. Say this and this to her. When she comes in, she will pretend to be another woman."

So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, he said, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be another woman? I have been sent to you with heavy news."

"Go, tell Jeroboam, 'This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I lifted you up from among the people and made you ruler over my people Israel."

"'I tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you. Yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes."

"'Instead you have done more evil than all who were before you. You have gone and made other gods for yourself, and metal images, to make me angry, and you have thrown me behind your back."

"'So look, I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off from Jeroboam every male who urinates against the wall, and him who is shut up and left in Israel. I will sweep away what is left of the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweeps away dung until it is all gone."

"'Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city, the dogs will eat. Anyone who dies in the field, the birds of the air will eat. For the LORD has spoken it.'"

"So get up and go to your own house. When your feet enter the city, the child will die."

"All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He alone of Jeroboam's family will come to a grave, because in him something good toward the LORD God of Israel was found in the house of Jeroboam."

"What is more, the LORD will raise up for himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam on that day. But what? Even now."

"For the LORD will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water. He will pull Israel up by the roots out of this good land that he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their groves and made the LORD angry."

"He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who sinned and made Israel sin."

Then Jeroboam's wife got up and left, and came to Tirzah. As she reached the threshold of the door, the child died.

They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him. This was according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke through his servant Ahijah the prophet.

The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he made war and how he reigned, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

Jeroboam reigned for twenty-two years. Then he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.

Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah, an Ammonite woman.

Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD. They stirred him to jealousy with the sins they committed, more than all that their fathers had done.

For they too built themselves high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill and under every green tree.

There were also sodomites in the land. They did all the disgusting things of the nations which the LORD had driven out before the children of Israel.

In the fifth year of king Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem.

He took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house. He took it all away, and he took all the shields of gold that Solomon had made.

King Rehoboam made shields of brass in their place, and put them in the care of the chiefs of the guard who watched the door of the king's house.

Whenever the king went into the house of the LORD, the guards carried the shields, and then brought them back into the guard room.

The rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.

Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. His mother's name was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. And Abijam his son reigned in his place.
