Read Psalms Chapter 18

For the leader of the music. A psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who sang these words to the LORD on the day the LORD saved him from all his enemies and from Saul. He said:

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

I will love you, O LORD, my strength.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. He is my God, my strength; I will trust in him. He is my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised. So I will be saved from my enemies.

The sorrows of death closed around me. The floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

The sorrows of hell surrounded me. The traps of death came before me.

In my trouble I called on the LORD, and cried out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came before him, right into his ears.

Then the earth shook and trembled. The foundations of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was angry.

Smoke went up from his nostrils, and fire came out of his mouth and burned things up. Coals were set on fire by it.

He bent the heavens low and came down, and darkness was under his feet.

He rode on a cherub, and flew. Yes, he flew on the wings of the wind.

He made darkness his hiding place. His tent around him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed by, with hail stones and coals of fire.

The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High spoke out loud, with hail stones and coals of fire.

Yes, he sent out his arrows and scattered them. He shot out lightnings and threw them into confusion.

Then the channels of the waters could be seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare, at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

He reached down from above and took hold of me. He drew me out of deep waters.

He rescued me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.

They came against me on the day of my trouble, but the LORD was my support.

He brought me out into a wide place. He rescued me, because he delighted in me.

The LORD rewarded me for my righteousness. He paid me back for the cleanness of my hands.

For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly turned away from my God.

For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put his laws away from me.

I was also blameless before him, and I kept myself from my sin.

So the LORD paid me back for my righteousness, for the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

To the merciful you show yourself merciful. To an upright man you show yourself upright.

To the pure you show yourself pure. To the crooked you show yourself hard.

For you will save the suffering people, but you will bring down proud looks.

For you will light my lamp. The LORD my God will make my darkness bright.

By you I have run through a troop of soldiers. By my God I have jumped over a wall.

As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the LORD has been tested. He is a shield to all who trust in him.

For who is God except the LORD? Or who is a rock except our God?

It is God who wraps me with strength, and makes my way perfect.

He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.

He teaches my hands to fight, so that my arms can bend a bow of steel.

You have also given me the shield of your salvation. Your right hand has held me up, and your gentleness has made me great.

You have made a wide path for my steps, so that my feet did not slip.

I have chased my enemies and caught them. I did not turn back until they were destroyed.

I have wounded them so that they could not get up. They have fallen under my feet.

For you have wrapped me with strength for the battle. You have put down under me those who rose up against me.

You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, so that I could destroy those who hate me.

They cried out, but there was no one to save them. They cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them.

Then I beat them as fine as dust before the wind. I threw them out like mud in the streets.

You have rescued me from the quarrels of the people. You have made me the head of the nations. A people I did not know will serve me.

As soon as they hear of me, they will obey me. Strangers will bow down to me.

The strangers will fade away, and come trembling out of their hiding places.

The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock. Let the God of my salvation be lifted high.

It is God who avenges me, and puts the peoples under me.

He rescues me from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise against me. You have saved me from the violent man.

So I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.

He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows mercy to his anointed one, to David and to his descendants for ever.
