Numbers 24 - Summary

Original Summary

Read Numbers Chapter 24 Summary

Abandoning omens, Balaam receives the Spirit of God and prophesies blessing upon Israel spread like gardens by rivers, with their king exalted. His oracle foretells a star from Jacob and a scepter from Israel crushing Moab and Edom, the first messianic prophecy from a pagan seer. Amalek, Kenites, Asshur, and Eber all feature in oracles of judgment before Balaam and Balak depart to their places.

Why 'Numbers' Got Its Name

The book of Numbers is named for the two censuses of Israel—one at Mount Sinai counting 603,550 fighting men and another in Moab nearly 40 years later. The Hebrew title 'Bemidbar' means 'in the wilderness.'
