Mark 5 - Summary

Original Summary

Read Mark Chapter 5 Summary

In the country of the Gerasenes, Jesus confronts a demon-possessed man living among tombs whom no chains could bind, casting the legion of demons into a herd of two thousand swine that rush into the sea, while the restored man is sent to proclaim Jesus' mercy. Returning across the sea, Jesus is approached by Jairus the synagogue ruler whose daughter lies dying, and while en route, the woman with a twelve-year hemorrhage touches His garment in faith and is healed, with Jesus commending her faith. Despite news of the girl's death and mourners' scornful laughter, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John into the house, commands 'Talitha cumi,' and raises the twelve-year-old, strictly charging secrecy while commanding that she be given food.

Mark Originally Ended with Fear

The earliest manuscripts of Mark end abruptly at 16:8 with the women fleeing the tomb in fear and saying nothing to anyone. The longer ending (verses 9-20) was added later by scribes who thought this ending too sudden.
