Read Mark Chapter 5

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1They came over to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2When Jesus came out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit met him at once, coming out of the tombs.

3He lived among the tombs. No one could tie him up any more, not even with chains.

4He had often been bound with chains on his feet and hands, but he pulled the chains apart and broke the irons in pieces. No one was strong enough to tame him.

5Night and day he was always in the hills and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6But when he saw Jesus far off, he ran and knelt down before him,

7and cried out with a loud voice, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beg you by God, do not torment me."

8For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit."

9Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them away out of the country.

11Now there was a great herd of pigs feeding there near the hills.

12All the devils begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may go into them."

13At once Jesus gave them leave. The unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd rushed down a steep bank into the sea (there were about two thousand of them), and they were drowned in the sea.

14The men who fed the pigs ran away and told it in the city and in the country. And people came out to see what had happened.

15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the devil, the one who had the legion. He was sitting there, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

16Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man possessed by the devil, and about the pigs as well.

17Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their region.

18When Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the devil begged to go with him.

19But Jesus did not allow him. He said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how he has had compassion on you."

20So the man went away and began to tell everyone in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him. And they were all amazed.

21When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered to him, and he was beside the sea.

22Look, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, named Jairus. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet

23and begged him hard, saying, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed. Then she will live."

24Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed close around him.

25There was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years.

26She had suffered much under many doctors, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.

27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes.

28For she said, "If I can only touch his clothes, I will be well."

29At once the flow of her blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her trouble.

30Jesus knew at once within himself that power had gone out of him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"

31His disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and do you say, 'Who touched me?'"

32And he looked around to see the woman who had done this.

33But the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened in her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be free from your trouble."

35While he was still speaking, some people came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue. They said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Master any more?"

36As soon as Jesus heard what was said, he said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid. Only believe."

37He let no one follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

38He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw the noise and confusion, and people weeping and wailing loudly.

39When he had come in, he said to them, "Why are you making all this noise and weeping? The girl is not dead, but sleeping."

40And they laughed at him. But when he had put them all outside, he took the girl's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the girl was lying.

41He took the girl by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cumi," which means, "Girl, I say to you, get up."

42At once the girl got up and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were completely amazed.

43He gave them strict orders that no one should know about it, and said that she should be given something to eat.

Explanation

Mark 5

In short

Mark 5 shows Jesus moving through the region healing and delivering people from spiritual and physical afflictions. Three encounters demonstrate his power: he frees a demon-possessed man, heals a woman of chronic bleeding, and raises a dead girl to life.

Context

Jesus and his disciples have just crossed the sea and arrived on the eastern shore. The chapter shows Jesus repeatedly approached by people in need, each encounter revealing his authority over spirits, sickness, and death. The woman who touches his garment approaches him while he is already heading to help Jairus, the synagogue leader.

What the text says

Verses 1-20 describe the demon-possessed man. He lived among tombs, uncontrollable despite chains. When Jesus arrives, the man runs to him. The demons inside him cry out, naming themselves "Legion" because they are many (verse 9), and beg not to be sent from the region (verses 10, 12). Jesus permits the demons to enter a nearby herd of two thousand swine, which then rush into the sea and drown (verse 13). The healed man wants to follow Jesus, but Jesus sends him home to tell what the Lord has done (verses 18-19).

Verses 21-34 show the woman with a twelve-year hemorrhage. She has spent all her money on physicians without improvement (verse 26). She touches Jesus' garment believing it will heal her, and is immediately restored (verses 27-29). Jesus turns and asks who touched him; the woman admits it, and he tells her "thy faith hath made thee whole" (verse 34).

Verses 35-43 recount Jairus' dead daughter. While Jesus speaks to the woman, messengers tell Jairus his daughter has died. Jesus enters the house, dismisses mourners who laugh at him, takes the girl's hand, and says "Talitha cumi," commanding her to rise. She walks immediately. Jesus instructs them to tell no one and to give her food (verses 41-43).

Takeaways

  • Jesus demonstrates authority over demons, physical illness, and death through three consecutive encounters.
  • Faith appears central: the healed woman's belief, Jairus' willingness to trust, and Jesus' instruction not to fear but to believe.
  • Jesus sends the restored man to testify to others, showing that healing moves people to witness to God's compassion.
