Early in the morning the chief priests met with the elders and the scribes and the whole council. They tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say it."
The chief priests accused him of many things, but he answered nothing.
Pilate asked him again, "Do you answer nothing? Look how many things they say against you."
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now at that feast he used to set free for them one prisoner, whichever one they asked for.
There was a man named Barabbas. He was in prison with those who had joined him in a revolt, and they had committed murder in the revolt.
The crowd shouted out loud and began to ask him to do as he had always done for them.
But Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to set free for you the King of the Jews?"
For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because they envied him.
But the chief priests stirred up the people to ask him to set Barabbas free for them instead.
Pilate spoke to them again and said, "What then do you want me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?"
And they cried out again, "Crucify him."
Then Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?" But they cried out even louder, "Crucify him."
So Pilate, wanting to please the people, set Barabbas free for them. He had Jesus whipped, and handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers led him away inside the hall called the Praetorium, and they called the whole company of soldiers together.
They dressed him in purple, and twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on his head.
Then they began to greet him: "Hail, King of the Jews!"
They hit him on the head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowed their knees and worshipped him.
When they had mocked him, they took the purple off him and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
A man named Simon from Cyrene was passing by on his way in from the country. He was the father of Alexander and Rufus. They forced him to carry the cross.
They gave him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he did not take it.
When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them, throwing lots to see what each man should take.
It was the third hour when they crucified him.
The written notice of the charge against him said, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
With him they crucified two thieves, one on his right and the other on his left.
So the scripture came true which says, "And he was counted with those who break the law."
Those who passed by insulted him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha, you who destroy the temple and build it in three days,"
"save yourself, and come down from the cross."
In the same way the chief priests mocked him among themselves, along with the scribes. They said, "He saved others, but he cannot save himself."
"Let Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." And those who were crucified with him insulted him too.
When the sixth hour came, darkness covered the whole land until the ninth hour.
At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you left me?"
When some of those standing near heard it, they said, "Look, he is calling Elias."
One man ran and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. He said, "Leave him alone. Let us see whether Elias will come to take him down."
Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and died.
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom.
The centurion who was standing in front of him saw how he cried out and died. He said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."
There were also women watching from far off. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
(These women had followed him and cared for him when he was in Galilee.) There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
Evening had now come. It was the day of preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath.
Joseph of Arimathaea came. He was a respected member of the council, and he too was waiting for the kingdom of God. He went boldly in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion to him and asked him whether Jesus had been dead for some time.
When he learned it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
Joseph bought fine linen, took him down, and wrapped him in the linen. He laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of rock, and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
