When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples,
"You know that in two days it will be the feast of the Passover. And the Son of man will be handed over to be crucified."
Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people met together at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.
They made a plan to arrest Jesus by a trick, and to kill him.
But they said, "Not during the feast day, or the people may riot."
A woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head while he was sitting at the table.
When his disciples saw it, they were angry. They said, "Why has this been wasted?"
"This ointment could have been sold for a lot, and the money given to the poor."
Jesus knew what they were saying. He said to them, "Why are you troubling the woman? She has done a good work for me."
You always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.
"I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told, in memory of her."
Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests.
He said to them, "What will you give me if I hand him over to you?" And they agreed to pay him thirty pieces of silver.
From that time he looked for a chance to betray him.
On the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Master says, My time is near. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'"
The disciples did as Jesus had told them, and they got the Passover ready.
When evening came, he sat down with the twelve.
While they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."
They were very sad, and each one of them began to say to him, "Lord, is it I?"
He answered, "The one who dips his hand with me in the dish will betray me."
"The Son of man goes as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for that man who betrays the Son of man. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born."
Then Judas, who was betraying him, said, "Master, is it I?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it."
While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it. He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take it and eat. This is my body."
Then he took the cup and gave thanks. He gave it to them and said, "Drink from it, all of you."
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is poured out for many, so that sins may be forgiven.
"But I tell you, from now on I will not drink this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.
Then Jesus said to them, "Tonight all of you will fall away because of me. For it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'"
"But after I am raised up again, I will go before you into Galilee."
Peter answered him, "Even if everyone else falls away because of you, I will never fall away."
Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth, tonight, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."
Peter said to him, "Even if I have to die with you, I will not deny you." And all the disciples said the same.
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray."
He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be sad and deeply troubled.
He went a little further, and fell with his face to the ground, and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "What, could you not watch with me for one hour?"
"Watch and pray, so that you do not fall into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing, but the body is weak."
He went away a second time and prayed, "O my Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me unless I drink it, may your will be done."
He came and found them sleeping again, for their eyes were heavy.
So he left them and went away again, and prayed a third time, saying the same words.
Then he came to his disciples and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. Look, the hour is near, and the Son of man is handed over into the hands of sinners."
"Get up, let us go. Look, the one who betrays me is here."
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came. With him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
Now the one who betrayed him had given them a sign. He said, "The one I kiss is the man. Hold him tight."
At once he came to Jesus and said, "Greetings, master," and kissed him.
Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took him.
Then one of those who were with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword. He struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place. For all who take the sword will die by the sword."
Do you think that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he will at once give me more than twelve legions of angels?
"But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled, that say it must happen this way?"
At that same hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to take me, as if I were a thief? I sat teaching in the temple with you every day, and you did not arrest me."
"But all this has happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him and ran away.
Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered.
But Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the high priest's palace. He went in and sat with the servants, to see how it would end.
Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council looked for false witness against Jesus, so that they could put him to death.
But they found none. Many false witnesses came, but still they found none. At last two false witnesses came,
and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"
The high priest stood up and said to him, "Have you no answer? What is this that these men say against you?"
But Jesus said nothing. The high priest said to him, "I put you under oath by the living God: tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God."
Jesus said to him, "You have said it. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy. Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard his blasphemy."
"What do you think?" They answered, "He deserves to die."
Then they spat in his face and beat him with their fists. Others slapped him with the palms of their hands,
and said, "Prophesy to us, you Christ. Who is it that struck you?"
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came to him and said, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee."
But he denied it in front of them all. He said, "I do not know what you are talking about."
When he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him. She said to the people there, "This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth."
Again he denied it with an oath: "I do not know the man."
After a while the people standing there came to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them too. Your speech gives you away."
Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, "I do not know the man." And at once the cock crowed.
