Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judaea, in the days of Herod the king. Look, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem.
They asked, "Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east, and we have come to worship him."
So he gathered together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and he asked them where Christ was to be born.
They said to him, "In Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what the prophet wrote:"
"And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, are not the least among the princes of Juda. For out of you shall come a Governor, who shall rule my people Israel."
Then Herod called the wise men to him secretly, and asked them carefully what time the star had appeared.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I may come and worship him too."
When they had heard the king, they went on their way. And look, the star they had seen in the east went before them, until it came and stood over the place where the young child was.
When they saw the star, they were filled with very great joy.
They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother. They fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and gave him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their own country by another way.
When they had gone, look, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt. Stay there until I bring you word, for Herod will look for the young child to destroy him."
So he got up and took the young child and his mother by night, and went away into Egypt.
He stayed there until the death of Herod. This happened so that what the Lord had spoken by the prophet would be fulfilled: "Out of Egypt have I called my son."
Then what was spoken by Jeremy the prophet was fulfilled:
"In Rama a voice was heard, crying out, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted, because they are no more."
The angel said, "Get up, take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who wanted to take the young child's life are dead."
So he got up and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling in Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Yet God warned him in a dream, so he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.
He came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This happened so that what was spoken by the prophets would be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."
