He told them a parable to show that people ought to pray always, and not lose heart.
He said, "In a certain city there was a judge. He did not fear God, and he cared nothing for people."
"There was a widow in that city. She kept coming to him and saying, 'Give me justice against the man who is against me.'"
"For a while he refused. But afterward he said to himself, 'I do not fear God, and I care nothing for people."
"'Yet because this widow keeps troubling me, I will see that she gets justice. If I do not, she will wear me out with her endless coming.'"
Then the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says."
"And will God not give justice to his own chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he be slow to help them?"
"I tell you, he will give them justice quickly. But when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
He told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and looked down on others.
"Two men went up into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector."
"The Pharisee stood and prayed like this to himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men. They rob and cheat, they are unjust, they commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector."
"'I fast twice a week. I give a tenth of everything I own.'"
"The tax collector stood far off. He would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest and said, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner.'"
"I tell you, this man went down to his house counted righteous, and not the other. For everyone who lifts himself up will be brought low, and the one who makes himself low will be lifted up."
People also brought their babies to him, so that he would touch them. But when his disciples saw it, they told them off.
But Jesus called them to him and said, "Allow the little children to come to me, and do not stop them. The kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
"I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
A certain ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except one, that is, God."
"You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not give false witness, Honour your father and your mother."
He said, "I have kept all these since I was young."
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
When he heard this, he was very sad, for he was very rich.
When Jesus saw that he was very sad, he said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!"
"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
Those who heard it said, "Who then can be saved?"
He said, "The things that are impossible for people are possible for God."
Then Peter said, "Look, we have left everything and followed you."
He said to them, "I tell you the truth, there is no one who has left house, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,"
"who will not receive many times as much in this present time, and in the world to come everlasting life."
Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, "Look, we are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of man will be completed."
"For he will be handed over to the Gentiles. He will be mocked, and treated shamefully, and spat on."
"They will whip him and put him to death. And on the third day he will rise again."
They understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not know what he meant.
As he came near to Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting by the roadside, begging.
When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what it meant.
Those who went in front told him off and said he should be quiet. But he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me."
Jesus stopped and ordered that the man be brought to him. When he had come near, Jesus asked him,
"What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me see again."
Jesus said to him, "See again. Your faith has saved you."
At once he could see, and he followed him, giving glory to God. And when all the people saw it, they praised God.
