Read Joshua Chapter 5

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

All the kings of the Amorites, who lived west of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who lived by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan in front of the people of Israel, until we had crossed over. Then their hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in them any more, because of the people of Israel.

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make sharp knives for yourself, and circumcise the people of Israel again, a second time."

So Joshua made sharp knives for himself, and circumcised the people of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males among the people who came out of Egypt, that is, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they came out of Egypt.

Now all the people who came out had been circumcised. But the people who were born in the wilderness on the way, as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.

For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the men of war who came out of Egypt were gone, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD. The LORD swore to them that he would not let them see the land which he had sworn to their fathers he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

It was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. They were uncircumcised, because no one had circumcised them along the way.

When they had finished circumcising all the people, they stayed where they were in the camp until they were healed.

And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the shame of Egypt from you." So the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

The people of Israel camped in Gilgal, and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, on the plains of Jericho.

The day after the Passover they ate some of the grain of the land: unleavened cakes and roasted grain, on that same day.

The manna stopped the day after they ate some of the grain of the land. The people of Israel had no more manna, but that year they ate the fruit of the land of Canaan.

When Joshua was near Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and there stood a man in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went up to him and said to him, "Are you for us, or for our enemies?"

He said, "No; I have now come as captain of the army of the LORD." And Joshua fell on his face to the ground and worshipped, and said to him, "What does my lord say to his servant?"

And the captain of the LORD's army said to Joshua, "Take your shoe off your foot, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
