There was also a portion for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. It went to Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh and the father of Gilead. Because he was a man of war, he was given Gilead and Bashan.

There was also a portion for the rest of the sons of Manasseh, family by family: for the sons of Abiezer, the sons of Helek, the sons of Asriel, the sons of Shechem, the sons of Hepher, and the sons of Shemida. These were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, family by family.

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

They came to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the leaders, and said, "The LORD commanded Moses to give us land among our brothers." So, as the LORD commanded, he gave them land among their father's brothers.

So ten portions fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan.

This was because the daughters of Manasseh received land among his sons, and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.

The border of Manasseh went from Asher to Michmethah, which lies in front of Shechem. Then the border went south to the people living at Entappuah.

Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah itself, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the sons of Ephraim.

The border went down to the river Kanah, on the south side of the river. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the river, and it ended at the sea.

The land to the south belonged to Ephraim, and the land to the north belonged to Manasseh, and the sea was its border. They reached Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.

In Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Bethshean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the people of Dor and its villages, the people of Endor and its villages, the people of Taanach and its villages, and the people of Megiddo and its villages, three regions in all.

Yet the sons of Manasseh could not drive out the people of those cities, and the Canaanites went on living in that land.

But when the children of Israel grew strong, they made the Canaanites work for them, and did not drive them out completely.

The children of Joseph said to Joshua, "Why have you given me only one portion and one share of land? I am a great people, for the LORD has blessed me until now."

Joshua answered them, "If you are a great people, then go up to the forest country and clear land for yourself there, in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, since the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you."

The children of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us. And all the Canaanites who live in the valley have chariots of iron, both those in Bethshean and its villages and those in the valley of Jezreel."

Then Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, and said, "You are a great people, and you have great power. You shall not have only one portion."

"The hill country shall be yours. It is forest, and you shall cut it down, and its far edges shall be yours. You shall drive out the Canaanites, even though they have iron chariots and are strong."
