John 5 - Summary

At the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, Jesus heals a man paralyzed for thirty-eight years, commanding him to rise, take up his bed, and walk on the Sabbath, which provokes Jewish persecution intensified when Jesus calls God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. Jesus' discourse on divine sonship explains that the Son does only what He sees the Father doing, has authority to give life and execute judgment, and will call the dead from their graves to resurrection of life or judgment. Four witnesses testify to Jesus—John the Baptist, Jesus' works, the Father Himself, and the Scriptures which the Jews search yet refuse to come to Jesus for life—while Moses becomes their accuser since his writings spoke of Jesus.
