Now in Jerusalem, by the sheep market, there is a pool. In the Hebrew language it is called Bethesda, and it has five porches.
In these porches lay a great crowd of sick people: the blind, the lame, and those whose bodies were withered. They were waiting for the water to move.
For at a certain time an angel went down into the pool and stirred up the water. Then the first person to step in after the water was stirred was made well of whatever disease he had.
A certain man was there who had been ill for thirty and eight years.
Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been like this a long time. He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?"
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am coming, someone else steps down before me."
Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk."
At once the man was made well. He took up his bed and walked. That same day was the sabbath.
So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the sabbath day. You are not allowed to carry your bed."
He answered them, "The one who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"
Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed, and walk'?"
But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in that place.
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "Look, you have been made well. Sin no more, or something worse may happen to you."
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus and tried to kill him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working."
So the Jews tried all the harder to kill him. He had not only broken the sabbath, but he also said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Then Jesus answered them, "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He can only do what he sees the Father do. Whatever the Father does, the Son does the same."
"For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all the things that he himself does. And he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be amazed."
"For just as the Father raises up the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom he wants."
"For the Father judges no one, but has handed over all judgment to the Son,"
"so that everyone should honour the Son, just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him."
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has everlasting life. He will not be condemned, but has passed from death into life."
"I tell you the truth, the hour is coming, and is here now, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. Those who hear will live."
"For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has given the Son to have life in himself."
"And he has given him authority to carry out judgment too, because he is the Son of man."
"Do not be amazed at this. The hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice,"
"and will come out. Those who have done good will rise to life; those who have done evil will rise to be condemned."
"By myself I can do nothing. I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me."
"If I speak as a witness about myself, my witness is not true."
"There is another who is a witness about me, and I know that his witness about me is true."
"You sent to John, and he was a witness to the truth."
"But I do not accept a witness from man. I say these things so that you may be saved."
"He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a time you were willing to be glad in his light."
"But I have a greater witness than John's. The works the Father has given me to finish, the very works that I do, are a witness about me, that the Father has sent me."
"And the Father himself, who sent me, has been a witness about me. You have never heard his voice or seen his form."
"And his word does not remain in you, for you do not believe the one he sent."
"Search the scriptures, for you think that in them you have eternal life. They are the very ones that speak about me."
"And you are not willing to come to me, so that you might have life."
"I do not accept honour from people."
"But I know you. You do not have the love of God in you."
"I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, him you will receive."
"How can you believe, when you accept honour from one another, and do not seek the honour that comes from God alone?"
"Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, in whom you trust."
"For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me."
"But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
