John 2 - Simple English

Read John Chapter 2

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there.

2Jesus was invited to the wedding, and so were his disciples.

3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."

4Jesus said to her, "Woman, what have I to do with you? My hour has not yet come."

5His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he tells you, do it."

6Six stone water jars were standing there, the kind the Jews used for washing to make themselves clean. Each one held two or three firkins.

7Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them right to the top.

8Then he said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the master of the feast." And they took it.

9The master of the feast tasted the water that had been made wine. He did not know where it came from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. So the master of the feast called the bridegroom

10and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first. Then, when people have drunk plenty, he brings out the worse wine. But you have kept the good wine until now."

11This was the first of the miracles Jesus did, and he did it in Cana of Galilee. He showed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. They stayed there only a few days.

13The Jews' Passover was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14In the temple he found people selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there.

15So he made a whip out of small cords and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen. He poured out the money changers' coins and turned over their tables.

16He said to those who sold doves, "Take these things away. Do not make my Father's house a house of trade."

17His disciples remembered that it was written, "The zeal of your house has eaten me up."

18Then the Jews answered him, "What sign do you show us, since you do these things?"

19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

20Then the Jews said, "This temple took forty-six years to build. Will you raise it up in three days?"

21But he was speaking of the temple of his body.

22So when he had risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this to them. And they believed the scripture, and the word that Jesus had said.

23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, on the feast day, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles he did.

24But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all people.

25He did not need anyone to tell him about man, for he knew what was in man.

Explanation

John 2

In short

John 2 shows two dramatic signs of who Jesus is: he turns water into wine at a wedding, and he clears the temple by force because it has become a marketplace. Both events reveal his power and his authority, and both lead people to believe in him, though Jesus himself remains cautious about trusting those who believe based on signs alone.

Context

This chapter comes early in John's gospel, right after Jesus has called his first disciples. Jesus is moving through Jewish society, attending celebrations and visiting the temple in Jerusalem. His mother appears at the wedding in Cana. The temple scene happens when Jesus goes to Jerusalem for Passover, the major Jewish festival. In both situations, Jesus acts in ways that seem shocking or unexpected to those around him.

What the text says

Verses 1-11 describe the wedding: Jesus and his disciples are invited to a celebration in Cana. When the wine runs out, Jesus's mother tells him. He first resists, saying "mine hour is not yet come," but then instructs servants to fill six stone jars with water. When they serve this liquid to the master of the feast, it has become wine, and excellent wine at that. The passage notes this was "the beginning of miracles" and that his disciples believed in him afterward.

Verses 12-17 move to the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus finds merchants selling animals and money-changers conducting business inside. He makes a whip and drives them out, overturning tables and declaring "make not my Father's house an house of merchandise." His disciples remember an old scripture about zeal for God's house.

Verses 18-22 record the confrontation: when challenged to show a sign authorizing his actions, Jesus says "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The text explains that he was speaking of his own body's resurrection, something his disciples only understood later.

Verses 23-25 note that in Jerusalem, many believed when they saw his miracles, but Jesus "did not commit himself unto them" because he knew what was inside people.

Takeaways

  • Jesus performs miraculous signs that reveal his glory and lead people to believe in him.
  • He acts with authority to purify sacred space from commercial misuse.
  • Jesus is cautious about belief based on seeing signs, because he knows human hearts cannot be trusted at face value.
