Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1There was a man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

2He came to Jesus at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. No one can do these miracles that you do unless God is with him."

3Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

4Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he go into his mother's womb a second time and be born?"

5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."

6"What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit."

7"Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'"

8"The wind blows where it wants to. You hear the sound of it, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

9Nicodemus answered him, "How can these things be?"

10Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things?"

11"I tell you the truth, we speak about what we know, and we tell about what we have seen. But you do not receive our witness."

12"I have told you earthly things, and you do not believe. How then will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?"

13"No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven."

14"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of man must be lifted up,"

15"so that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

16"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

17"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world through him might be saved."

18"Whoever believes in him is not condemned. But whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God."

19"And this is the condemnation: light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."

20"For everyone who does evil hates the light. He does not come to the light, in case his deeds should be shown up."

21"But whoever does the truth comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds are done in God."

22After this Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judaea. He stayed there with them and baptized.

23John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And people came and were baptized.

24For John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25Then an argument came up between some of John's disciples and the Jews about washing for purity.

26They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, the one you spoke about, look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him."

27John answered, "A man can receive nothing unless it is given to him from heaven."

28"You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I am sent ahead of him.'"

29"The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the bridegroom's friend, who stands and listens to him, is very glad when he hears the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine is now complete."

30"He must become greater, but I must become less."

31"The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks of the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all."

32"He tells what he has seen and heard, and no one receives what he says."

33"Whoever has received what he says has set his seal to this: that God is true."

34"For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give him the Spirit by measure."

35"The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand."

36"Whoever believes in the Son has everlasting life. Whoever does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God stays on him."

Explanation

John 3

In short

A Jewish leader named Nicodemus visits Jesus at night and learns that entry into God's kingdom requires spiritual rebirth. The chapter then shifts to Jesus' teaching about God's love for the world and judgment based on whether people accept or reject him, ending with John the Baptist's humble witness that Jesus is greater and his own role is finished.

Context

This chapter begins Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish council (verses 1-21). Nicodemus comes secretly at night, apparently impressed by Jesus' miraculous signs. The middle section (verses 22-36) moves to a different setting: Jesus is baptizing in Judaea while John the Baptist is also baptizing nearby. John's disciples become concerned about Jesus' growing popularity and report it to John, prompting his response.

What the text says

Nicodemus opens by acknowledging Jesus as a teacher from God because of his miracles (verse 2). Jesus replies that no one can even "see the kingdom of God" without being "born again" (verse 3). Nicodemus misunderstands this as physical rebirth (verse 4). Jesus clarifies: entry requires being "born of water and of the Spirit" (verse 5). He explains that physical birth produces flesh, but spiritual birth produces spirit (verse 6). Using wind as an image (verse 8), Jesus says those born of the Spirit are like wind, invisible in their origin and destination.

Jesus then shifts to teaching about his own coming death and resurrection, comparing it to Moses lifting up a serpent in the wilderness (verse 14). Believers in him will have eternal life rather than perish (verse 15). Verse 16 states God's motivation: love for the world led him to give his Son so believers might have eternal life. Jesus was not sent to condemn but to save (verse 17). Belief or disbelief in God's Son determines condemnation or freedom from it (verse 18). The root cause of judgment is that "light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (verse 19).

In the final section, Jesus and his disciples move to Judaea and baptize (verse 22). John the Baptist is also baptizing (verse 23). His disciples report that Jesus, the one John witnessed to, now baptizes and everyone goes to him (verse 26). John responds that a person receives nothing except what heaven gives (verse 27). He declares he is not the Christ but was sent before him (verse 28). Using the image of a bridegroom's friend, John says his joy is complete as Jesus increases while he decreases (verses 29-30). The closing verses (31-36) testify that the one from heaven speaks God's words with full authority, and belief in the Son determines whether one has eternal life or faces God's wrath.

Takeaways

  • Entry into God's kingdom requires a spiritual transformation, not a matter of birth or status.
  • God's motive for sending his Son is love for the world, not judgment, though rejection of Christ brings condemnation.
  • People are drawn or repelled by Jesus depending on whether their deeds are evil or truthful.
