In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
All things were made by him. Without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
He came as a witness, to tell people about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe.
He was not that Light, but he was sent to tell people about that Light.
That was the true Light, which gives light to every man who comes into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, but the world did not know him.
He came to his own people, and his own people did not receive him.
But to all who did receive him, he gave the power to become the sons of God, that is, to those who believe in his name.
They were born not of blood, nor of the will of the body, nor of the will of man, but of God.
The Word was made flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John told people about him, and called out, "This is the one I spoke of. I said, 'The one who comes after me is greater than I am, for he was before me.'"
From all that he has, we have all received, grace upon grace.
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, has made him known.
This is what John said when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
He spoke openly and did not deny it. He said plainly, "I am not the Christ."
So they asked him, "What then? Are you Elias?" He said, "I am not." "Are you that prophet?" He answered, "No."
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I am the voice of one calling out in the wilderness, 'Make the way of the Lord straight,' as the prophet Esaias said."
The men who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
They asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor that prophet?"
John answered them, "I baptize with water, but there is one standing among you whom you do not know."
"He is the one who comes after me and is greater than I am. I am not worthy to undo the strap of his shoe."
These things happened in Bethabara on the other side of Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and he said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
"This is the one I spoke about when I said, 'After me comes a man who is greater than I am, for he was before me.'"
"I did not know him. But I came baptizing with water so that he might be shown to Israel."
John gave this witness: "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and resting on him."
"I did not know him. But the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'"
"I have seen it, and I tell you that this is the Son of God."
The next day John was standing there again, with two of his disciples.
He looked at Jesus as he walked by, and said, "Look, the Lamb of God."
The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
Then Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
The first thing he did was to find his own brother Simon. He said to him, "We have found the Messias" (which means the Christ).
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of Jona. You shall be called Cephas" (which means A stone).
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets wrote about too: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Look, here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered him, "Do you believe because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree'? You shall see greater things than these."
And he said to him, "I tell you the truth, from now on you shall see heaven opened, and the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of man."
