Dinah was the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob. She went out to see the young women of the land.
Shechem was the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country. When he saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
Shechem spoke to his father Hamor and said, "Get me this girl to be my wife."
Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah. His sons were with his cattle in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came home.
When Jacob's sons heard what had happened, they came in from the field. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because Shechem had done a shameful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter. Such a thing ought not to be done.
Hamor talked with them and said, "My son Shechem longs for your daughter with all his heart. Please give her to him as his wife."
Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
"You shall live with us. The land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and get property in it."
And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find grace in your eyes, and whatever you say to me, I will give."
"Ask me for as large a bride price and gift as you like, and I will give whatever you say to me. Only give me the girl to be my wife."
Because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah, the sons of Jacob answered him and his father Hamor with deceit.
They said to them, "We cannot do this thing. We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us."
We will agree with you on one condition only: that you become like us, and every male among you is circumcised.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves. We will live with you, and we will become one people.
"But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go."
Their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem the son of Hamor.
The young man did not wait to do what they asked, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. He was the most honoured of all his father's house.
So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city. They said,
"These men are peaceable with us. So let them live in the land and trade in it. Look, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives for us, and let us give them our daughters."
But the men will agree to live with us and to be one people only on this condition: that every male among us is circumcised, as they are circumcised.
"Will not their cattle and their goods and all their animals be ours? Let us only agree with them, and they will live with us."
All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem. Every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
On the third day, while they were in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword. They came against the city boldly and killed every male.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword. They took Dinah out of Shechem's house and went away.
The sons of Jacob came upon the dead and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
They took their sheep, their oxen, their donkeys, all that was in the city, and all that was in the field.
They carried off all their wealth, and took captive all their little ones and their wives, and plundered everything that was in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me. You have made me stink among the people of this land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have only a few men. They will gather together against me and kill me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house."
And they said, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
